The narrative opens with the narrator introducing himself as Ishmael, a sailor seeking to escape the terrors of land life. He signs on as a crew member aboard the whaling ship Pequod, commanded by Captain Ahab, a man obsessed with hunting Moby Dick, a legendary white sperm whale that previously took his leg. Driven by revenge rather than profit, Ahab reveals his true purpose to the crew, turning a commercial voyage into a singular quest for destruction.

As the Pequod sails across the globe, the story blends high-seas adventure with encyclopedic chapters on whale biology and oil extraction. The novel intersperses these technical details with songs, poetry, and Shakespearean soliloquies to explore themes of fate, good versus evil, and the existence of God. The climax occurs when the ship finally encounters the white whale, leading to a confrontation where Ahab's obsession destroys the vessel and kills almost every crew member.

Ishmael survives the disaster alone, drifting on a coffin buoy until rescued by another vessel. This survivor recounts the tale, allowing the book to conclude without the protagonist who began it. The work was published in London in October 1851 as The Whale and in New York a month later as Moby-Dick; or, The Whale. It sold poorly during Melville's lifetime and went out of print before his death in 1891.
