Gantz
Hiroya Oku
Aperçu
Kei Kurono and Masaru Kato die in a train accident only to wake up in a Tokyo apartment filled with strangers. A black sphere labeled Gantz forces them into a deadly game where they must hunt down aliens using high-tech suits and weapons. Points earned from killing these extraterrestrial threats can buy resurrection or material wishes, but failure means immediate execution. The story spans 37 volumes serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Young Jump between June 2000 and June 2013.
Hiroya Oku crafted this seinen series to explore how ordinary people react when stripped of societal norms and faced with existential dread. The narrative shifts from simple survival horror to complex philosophical debates about the value of life and the nature of humanity. Dark Horse Comics published the English translation, preserving the original color pages and mature content that defines the work.
The franchise expanded beyond print with a 26-episode anime by Gonzo in 2004 and two live-action films in 2011 starring Tadanobu Asano. Critics often point to the 2016 CGI film Gantz: O as the definitive adaptation for its visual fidelity and emotional depth. This movie revitalized interest in the source material and introduced the story to a global audience through Netflix.
