    Aperçu

The magical world of Auradon Prep is about to get a whole lot wickeder. Disney Channel's Descendants, directed by Kenny Ortega, introduces a modern fairy-tale kingdom where the children of iconic villains are given a chance at redemption. The 2015 TV movie follows Mal (Dove Cameron), Evie (Sofia Carson), Carlos (Cameron Boyce), and Jay (Booboo Stewart) as they leave the isolated Isle of the Lost to attend Auradon Prep alongside the offspring of heroes. The film cleverly blends fantasy, coming-of-age drama, and musical numbers, with a tone that's lighter and more comedic than its source material. Produced by Bad Angels Productions and 5678 Productions for Disney Channel, it became a ratings hit and spawned a franchise of sequels and spin-offs. The cast also includes Mitchell Hope as Prince Ben and Brenna D'Amico as Jane. With a G rating and a runtime of 1 hour 52 minutes, Descendants earned generally positive reviews for its catchy songs and fresh take on Disney lore.

Ortega, known for his work on High School Musical and Newsies, brought his signature choreographic energy to the production, staging musical numbers that blend pop, hip-hop, and Broadway influences. The soundtrack, released by Walt Disney Records on July 31, 2015, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling over 40,000 copies in its first week. The single "Rotten to the Core" became a viral hit, accumulating more than 100 million YouTube views. Filming took place in Vancouver, British Columbia, with Auradon Prep's exterior shot at the VanDusen Botanical Garden and Heritage Hall, while the Isle of the Lost was constructed on soundstages. The contrast between the two settings was deliberate: the bright, orderly school against the decaying, grimy island underscores the film's central theme of choice versus environment.

    PlotSans spoiler

Twenty years after the villains were banished, the kingdom of Auradon flourishes under the rule of King Beast and Queen Belle. On the Isle of the Lost, a grim island surrounded by a magical barrier, the children of the most notorious villains have grown up in a world of decay and scheming. Mal, daughter of Maleficent; Evie, daughter of the Evil Queen; Carlos, son of Cruella de Vil; and Jay, son of Jafar, have been raised to embrace their parents' wicked ways, but they have never known life beyond the barrier.

Prince Ben, the teenage son of Beast and Belle, is about to be crowned king. As his first official decree, he proposes bringing four children from the Isle of the Lost to Auradon Prep, the kingdom's prestigious school, to give them a chance at a better life. The four chosen are Mal, Evie, Carlos, and Jay. Before they leave, Maleficent tasks Mal with stealing Fairy Godmother's magic wand, which has the power to break the barrier and allow the villains to escape. Mal reluctantly agrees, knowing that failure means never returning home.

Upon arriving in Auradon, the villain kids are overwhelmed by the bright, cheerful, and rule-abiding world. They are assigned to Fairy Godmother, the school's principal, who pairs them with good student mentors. Mal is paired with Jane, Fairy Godmother's shy and insecure daughter who desperately wants to be pretty. Evie meets Doug, the son of one of the seven dwarfs, who is kind and academically focused. Carlos bonds with Lonnie, the daughter of Mulan and Li Shang, who is athletic and brave. Jay becomes friends with Chad Charming, the arrogant son of Cinderella and Prince Charming.

As the four navigate Auradon Prep, they struggle with their parents' expectations versus their own emerging desires. Mal finds herself drawn to Prince Ben, who is kind, earnest, and genuinely believes in the possibility of redemption. Evie discovers she has talents beyond being pretty and begins to value her intelligence. Carlos overcomes his fear of dogs, a legacy from his mother, and finds friendship. Jay channels his competitive nature into sports. Along the way, they face challenges: fitting in with the good kids, resisting the temptation to revert to villainous behavior, and dealing with the scheming of Audrey, the daughter of Aurora and Prince Phillip, who is Ben's jealous ex-girlfriend. The story builds toward Ben's coronation, which is also the deadline for Mal to steal the wand.

    Accueil critique

    Consensus critique
