The World Is Dancing
Kazuto Mihara
Aperçu
The narrative opens with a young boy named Oniyasha performing sarugaku alongside his father Kan'ami under the patronage of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. This historical seinen manga traces the protagonist's evolution into Zeami Motokiyo, the playwright who transformed folk performance into classical Noh theater. Author Kazuto Mihara focuses on the rigorous discipline required to master the art form and the philosophical development of yūgen, a concept of profound grace central to Noh aesthetics.
Mihara grounds the drama in meticulous period research, depicting details ranging from the architecture of Kyoto's Kitano Tenmangū shrine to the intricate costumes of medieval courtiers. Unlike his earlier work Hyouge Mono, which offered a comedic take on tea ceremony culture, this series adopts a restrained tone to explore the tension between artistic purity and political survival within the Muromachi court.
Kodansha serialized the series in Morning magazine from March 25, 2021 to October 27, 2022 before collecting it into six tankōbon volumes. English-speaking readers can access all six volumes digitally through Kodansha USA Publishing starting August 23, 2021. The publisher priced each volume at $3.99, though no physical edition has been announced as of late 2026.
