David Letterman used to be the guy who hated the whole concept of self-driving cars, but then a ride from an airport flipped his entire script. He tells the story of driving out and suddenly spotting these white vehicles with gyroscopes on top and glowing lights behind them, realizing they were hovering more than actually driving. Once he figured out they were 'whimo' cars, the situation got weird fast because they started swarming him like a pod of dolphins while he was trying to get somewhere. At first, he thought this swarm of whimo knew exactly what it was doing and was just guiding him to his destination, so he decided to relax. The twist is that the car didn't have a driver in it at all, which made him realize his initial trust was misplaced. Instead of feeling relieved, he rolled down his window, looked right into the empty cabin where nobody was sitting, and leaned out to shout profanity directly at the machine. Now, after that experience, he's not just okay with autonomous cars; he says he is genuinely thrilled by the idea of them, completely reversing his previous hatred for the technology.
