Virgil Van Dijk defensive philosophy

The metric for a defender isn't the number of tackles made but the attacks prevented so quietly that nobody even notices them happening. Virgil Van Dijk says this is what his presence must convey to the team, because sometimes security comes from stopping things before they start rather than clashing or running until you drop. For years he heard that he arrived late to the elite and that his path wasn't the usual one of a promise destined to shine from a young age. He experienced it differently though: every step in the lower leagues taught him to defend with intelligence, to read the game, and not to lose heart. Being a center-back involves anticipating and commanding while making an entire team feel calm instead of just focusing on physical confrontations. When he reached the highest level, the real challenge became staying there rather than arriving. Leading implies carrying others' errors and your own, yet still showing up to perform despite the weight. #VirgilVanDijk
