Lothar Matthäus Italy 90

The tactical prep before the Italy 90 clash revealed a shift in who actually scared the German defense. Lothar Matthäus admits their pre-match talks flagged Caniggia as the bigger threat than Maradona, largely because he was just coming off a goal against Brazil and possessed that blistering speed. While Maradona was assessed as being at a lower performance level compared to his dominant form back in Mexico, Caniggia stood out as the most dangerous player on the pitch for them. In the end, Matthäus concluded that Caniggia was simply the best player of that specific World Cup, surpassing the famous star in terms of immediate danger.
