The Indian National Congress has been the largest political party in India by membership since the time of independence. From 1947 through 1951 it held that position without interruption, and the same remained true in 1952. The party has maintained its status as the biggest by membership across all these years. The clenched fist graphic uses the saffron white and green of the national flag to drive home a message of solidarity and resistance that has defined much of the party's long history.
