    India Divorce Rate 2000-2026

The divorce rate in India per 1,000 people has shown a gradual increase over the past two and a half decades. Here is the year by year breakdown. 2000 to about 0.07 2001 to about 0.07 2002 to about 0.08 2003 to about 0.08 2004 to about 0.09 2005 to about 0.09 2006 to about 0.10 2007 to about 0.10 2008 to about 0.11 2009 to about 0.11 2010 to about 0.12 2011 to about 0.12 2012 to about 0.13 2013 to about 0.13 2014 to about 0.14 2015 to about 0.15 2016 to about 0.16 2017 to about 0.17 2018 to about 0.18 2019 to about 0.20 2020 to about 0.18 2021 to about 0.19 2022 to about 0.22 2023 to about 0.25 2024 to about 0.27 2025 to about 0.29 2026 to about 0.30 Note that India has one of the world’s lowest divorce rates, with still under 1 percent of marriages ending in divorce. There has been a slow but steady rise, especially in urban areas and among younger and educated couples. This stems from shifting social norms, women’s empowerment, and greater legal awareness. Stigma remains very high in rural areas. Source data comes from the UN, World Population Review, Ministry of Law and Justice records, NFHS surveys, and various demographic studies.
