It turns out that the ocean can produce a blue glow after dark, and the effect is genuine rather than imagined. This infrequent natural event has the scientific name of bioluminescence. The cause involves microscopic plankton emitting light as a response to agitation from waves, currents and any water movement. The best places to witness this are remote coastal areas situated well beyond the reach of city lights.
