Authorities accuse him of misappropriating over 92 million baht in temple funds. The money allegedly went to Punyavee Rungrueang, a 47-year-old female associate. Then came CCTV footage showing the abbot in a sexual relationship with the woman inside his temple residence. After the investigation, he was removed from the monastic order. One case would be its own story. This one doesn't sit alone. Back in 2025, a separate scandal shook the same Buddhist community, centered on Wilawan Emsawat. She was accused of targeting monks with money and influence, drawing them into intimate relationships, then using private material to demand payments. Investigators said her devices held tens of thousands of files, intimate videos among them, and that she had links to at least 15 monks. Roughly 385 million baht was transferred in connection with the scheme. Multiple senior monks left the priesthood afterward, and the public argument about money, power and misconduct inside the clergy hasn't cooled since. Thailand gets called one of the most deeply Buddhist societies in the world, and that reputation is earned. A monk's robe carries enormous cultural respect. Temples lean hard on public donations. Many Thai men traditionally spend part of their lives in monastic life. So when the person inside the robe gets tangled up in sex and money, the damage doesn't stop with him. People aren't just reacting to a forbidden relationship or a financial crime. They're looking at the gap between what the symbol promises and what the human wearing it actually did.
